Duck Raising FAQ’s

FAQs

  • Probably not. Duck’s are cute when they’re ducklings but they grow up to be a difficult, messy pet. Do your research ahead of time to decide if the duck life is for you.

  • The most likely answer is hormones. If you have a flock of ducks I would recommend having 3 females to every 1 male. Even with the correct ratio, the males will become aggressive during mating season. Mating season peaks in late Spring but you will see the aggressive behavior begin as early as December. The ONLY solution is to separate your fighting birds until the season ends in June.

  • No. Domestic ducks breeds are not built to survive in the wild like wild ducks. Although your pet duck looks like the ducks you see at the park, it lacks the instincts to forage for all of its meals. Domestic duck breeds also can’t really fly. This prevents them from migrating to a warmer climate come winter. Leaving your duck at a local park or pond is a death sentence.

  • I stick to Purina Duck Pellets. Ducks have different nutritional needs than other birds and the duck pellets cover all of my bases.
